Eating Cherries for Healthy Skin

Did you know that cherries are full of antioxidants that are essential to healthy skin care? Packed with Vitamins A, B, C and E, these vitamins are known to promote a radiant complexion. Cherries also aid in reducing cholesterol, preventing cancer and heart disease and sliming your waistline. Not to mention the fact that they are also a perfect solution to reducing insomnia, allowing you to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night which is vital for healthy skin.

Why is sleep so important for healthy skin?

Healthy skin requires nightly repair which is why sleep is an important component to achieving beautiful skin.  Cherries contain melatonin, which is a substance that is naturally found in our brains that allows us to maintain normal sleep patterns. Substituting a melatonin supplement with a handful of cherries before bed allows your body to naturally fall asleep at night, giving you the uninterrupted sleep that your body needs to function. While we sleep, our skin repairs itself and produces new, healthy skin cells. This is called cellular turnover. Cellular turnover pushes dead skin cells up to the surface, encouraging them to shed allowing healthy skin to reveal itself.

Lose weight and rehydrate your skin

In addition to sleeping better, our health and wellness is another key factor in how our bodies function and perform. Cherries are made up of 75% water and are full of soluble fiber.  Making it a wonderful snack, supplying the body with the water it needs and one that will trim your waistline while keeping your skin hydrated. The water content keeps you full while the fiber accelerates your metabolism. Eating your water as Dr. Murad advises, allows your digestive system more time to retrieve the water from your food source and sending it to your outer most layers of your body – your skin. Hydrated skin promotes cellular turnover, plumps fine lines and wrinkles resulting in a beautiful, healthy complexion.

What else do eating cherries do for the body?

Consuming cherries, either by eating the fruit or in its juice form, will give you all of these benefits and more. According to the California Cherry Advisory Board, eating 20 cherries is 10 times more effective than 1 aspirin giving you the pain relief you are looking for. Anthocyanins are a substance found in cherries that actually act as pain blockers, who knew such a simple, sweet little fruit could prevent pain. Cherries are also known to have anti-inflammatory effects as well. Those suffering from acne and/or cystic acne may show a reduction in redness, pain and inflammation after consuming a bowl of cherries.

Is it better to eat or drink cherries?

I prefer to eat my way to better skin care. Drinking cherry juice will move through your urinary tract system faster than your digestive system, losing out on the body retrieving the water contained in the cherry. When in doubt, eat your cherries for flirty, flawless skin.
